Shoebill stork in Uganda
The shoebill is a very large bird with an enormous bill, and it stands up to 152 cm high. People call it the shoebill stork, but the name misleads: the bird is closer to pelicans than to storks. Its scientific name is Balaeniceps rex.
The shoebill is a Vulnerable species. The world population is roughly 3,300 to 5,300 mature birds, and the number is falling. That makes any sighting special, and it is a reason to keep your distance and never chase a bird.
In Murchison Falls the place to look is the delta where the Nile flows into Lake Albert, a wetland of papyrus and reed beds. A boat trip downstream from Paraa is the usual way in. A shoebill is a search, not a guarantee.

Shoebill in Uganda: where to look
Three places, each a different kind of outing.
The Murchison delta
The Albert Delta is the park's shoebill area. A boat leaves from the south bank at Paraa and heads about 20 km downstream through papyrus channels. It is a trip of its own, separate from the cruise to the falls.
Boat cruise guide โZiwa Rhino Sanctuary
On the road north from Kampala, the sanctuary offers a shoebill trek from 06:00 to 09:00. It is a short detour on the way to the park.
Ziwa guide โMabamba Bay
Mabamba is a different wetland, on Lake Victoria, and a protected site where the shoebill matters. Do not mix it up with Lake Albert or the Murchison delta.
Our pick: a Nile boat safari
Boat safaris on the Nile are where shoebills are sometimes spotted, but no tour can promise one.

Murchison Falls boat trips and delta cruises
Nile cruises from Paraa to the falls and into the delta, the usual way to look for the shoebill. Check the departure time and what is included.
The delta cruise from Paraa
The delta cruise runs downstream for about 20 km and takes 4 to 5 hours. The scheduled departure is 07:00 from the south bank jetty at Paraa, and an early start suits birdwatching. The guide price is around $55 per person. It depends on your visitor category and on the minimum number of guests, so confirm it when you book. Private departures can be arranged.
Bring binoculars, a hat and water, and expect a long time on a small boat. Other birds live in the wetland too, so the trip is about more than one species. The delta is part of a protected wetland, listed as a Ramsar site since 2006, so quiet and distance matter.
Choose the boat with care. A lake ferry or an overloaded boat is not the same as a safari cruise. Check that the boat is sound, that life jackets are on board and that the exits are clear.

Delta, Ziwa and Mabamba compared
Three places that come up when people search for shoebills in Uganda.
| Place | Water | Outing | Price for visitors from abroad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Murchison delta | Nile and Lake Albert | Boat from Paraa, 4 to 5 hours, 07:00 departure | From about $55 |
| Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary | Ranch wetland | Shoebill trek, 06:00 to 09:00 | $30 adult, $15 child |
| Mabamba Bay | Lake Victoria | โ | โ |
For most visitors on a Murchison Falls trip, the delta cruise is the one to plan around, with the Ziwa trek as an extra if you drive past. Mabamba is a different trip on a different lake.
Shoebill Uganda: how to improve your chances
Habits that help, without promising a sighting.
- Go early. The scheduled delta departure is at 07:00. Leave more time than the minimum.
- Stay quiet. Ask the crew to approach slowly and to cut the engine early. Noise and sudden moves disturb wild birds.
- Keep your distance. Let the bird decide how close the boat gets, and follow your guide's advice.
- Add a second try. Pair the delta with a shoebill trek at Ziwa on the way north if your route allows it.
Prices at Ziwa for foreign visitors are $30 for adults and $15 for children for the shoebill or bird tour. Rhino tracking at Ziwa is a separate activity at $60 for adults. See the Ziwa guide. For the other animals of the park, read our wildlife guide.
