Two Nile boat cruises from Paraa
A Murchison Falls boat cruise is one of the most common activities in the park, and there are two different trips. The upstream cruise runs from Paraa to the base of the falls. The downstream cruise runs about 20 km to the delta where the Nile reaches Lake Albert. They have different lengths, prices and wildlife, so choose before you book.
Both start at the jetty on the south bank at Paraa. Meet at least 15 minutes before the agreed departure. Pick-up from the north bank or from other riverside lodges can be arranged in advance.

Our picks: tours with a Nile boat cruise
The boat on these tours runs to the base of the falls. The one-day trip is the quickest way to do it, and the two-day trips add a night in a lodge so you are not on the road for most of the day.

Guide prices for 2026. Park fees may be charged on top.
| Cruise | Departs | Length | Guide price per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upstream to the falls | 2:30 p.m.; 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on request | About 3 hours | From $35 |

For most first visits, the upstream cruise is the one to take. It brings you to the foot of the falls and shows the river life along the way. Add the delta cruise if birds matter to you and you can spare a morning.
Upstream: the Nile boat cruise to the falls
The classic trip.
The Nile boat cruise to the falls follows the river between wooded banks. Hippos and crocodiles live along the river, and you may see elephants, buffalo and birds on the shore. The boat does not go through the gorge. It stops at the base of the falls, where the water drops about 45 m into the river. Expect spray and noise.
UWA also runs launch trips. A launch trip to the bottom of the falls costs $30 for foreign non-residents, $25 for foreign residents, $20 for visitors from the rest of Africa and UGX 30,000 for East African citizens (UWA tariff, July 2024 to December 2026). A launch trip takes about 2 hours, while the full private cruise takes about 3 hours. Minimum charges apply: a small boat costs at least $120 or UGX 120,000, with a minimum party of 8 people in this park, and a large boat starts at 15 passengers and takes at most 45. Confirm the minimum when you book.
Downstream: the delta cruise
A longer trip for birds and papyrus.
The delta cruise heads downstream through papyrus and wetland to where the Victoria Nile meets Lake Albert. The Murchison Falls to Albert Delta wetland system is a protected Ramsar site, important for fish and waterbirds. The delta is also the area where people look for the shoebill. A sighting cannot be promised, and no month or time of day can be called best. Read the shoebill page for the bird and where to look.
The delta cruise takes 3 to 5 hours, depending on the trip. Ask for the length and the departure time when you book. Private departures are possible by arrangement.
Safety on the water
Basic checks before you board.
- Check that the boat is seaworthy and not overloaded.
- Ask for life jackets before departure.
- Find the emergency exits before the boat leaves the jetty.
Overloaded ferries have caused fatal accidents on Lake Albert, which is why these checks matter. This does not point to a problem on Paraa safari boats, but the same rules apply on any boat. Plan your trip around the weather too, since rain and wind change how comfortable a cruise is.
