Lake Albert, Uganda: the basics

Lake Albert lies on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Victoria Nile crosses Murchison Falls National Park, drops over the falls and runs on into the Albert Delta, where it meets the lake. The protected wetland there, the Murchison Falls-Albert Delta Wetland System, is Ramsar site 1640. It was designated on 15 September 2006, covers 17,293 hectares and stretches from the Top of the Falls to the river mouth. Its boundary is not the same as the boundary of the national park.

The wetland matters for the breeding of native fish and water birds. For a visitor, the easiest way to see this end of the river is the Murchison Falls boat cruise downstream from Paraa. The lake itself is a border lake, so it is a place to look at from the delta and the park, not a place to plan a crossing.

The Albert Delta by boat

The delta cruise and the waterfall cruise are two different trips. The waterfall cruise goes upstream. The delta cruise goes downstream from Paraa for about 20 km through papyrus and wetland channels. The scheduled morning departure is at 07:00 from the south bank jetty, and the trip takes 3 to 5 hours on the water, usually 4 to 5. Ask for the exact length when you book.

The indicative price is $55 per person. It depends on your visitor category and on a minimum number of guests. Private departures can be arranged. The delta is the area to look for the shoebill. A sighting cannot be promised on any trip, and no month can be named as the best one. Our shoebill guide explains what to expect.

Fishing on Lake Albert

A working lake, not a free angling spot.

Fishing is a main activity on the shores, and the delta is a spawning ground for native fish. That does not make every landing site or village open to visitors. Do not assume you can walk into a fishing village or hire a boat at a random shore. Ask your lodge or driver which visits are arranged and which are not.

Sport fishing in the park needs its own permit. The UWA tariff for July 2024 to December 2026 sets the permit at $50 for one day and $150 for four days, or UGX 20,000 and UGX 60,000 for citizens of East African states. Confirm the amount and what it covers before you pay.

Safety on and near the lake

Border advice and boat checks.

Border area

Avoid non-essential travel within 20 km of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. That matters most for plans on Lake Albert. It does not by itself apply to the whole national park. Do not plan a lake crossing or a border trip.

Ferries and small boats

Overloaded ferries have caused fatal accidents on Lake Albert. Before you board any boat, check that it is seaworthy, that life jackets are on board and that the exits are clear. This is a general warning for the lake and does not describe a particular safari cruise.

Entry rules

Entry and health rules can change at short notice. At present travellers fill in a Traveller Locator Form, and recent travel from the Democratic Republic of the Congo can lead to exclusion from transit. Check the current rules before you fly.

Oil development around the lake

The oil sites around the park, in brief.

Oil fields lie south of the Victoria Nile and in the park area. The Tilenga project is run by TotalEnergies, mainly in Buliisa and Nwoya. By the end of September 2026, 277 wells had been drilled on 22 sites, with 3 drilling rigs, one of them inside the national park and the others south of the Victoria Nile. Construction of the infrastructure continues. This is not yet full commercial production.

The Kingfisher field belongs to CNOOC. The East African Crude Oil Pipeline is planned to carry crude oil from Kabaale in Uganda to the port of Tanga in Tanzania. TotalEnergies puts the permanent land take inside the park at under 0.03 percent. That figure describes the permanent installations only and is not a statement about the full effect on the environment.

In September 2026 Masindi District validated a management plan for the park for 2026/27 to 2035/36. It names oil and gas development, poaching, invasive species and conflict between people and wildlife as challenges. Electric fencing is being built in sections and is not yet continuous. None of this means the park is closed. Check current access with your lodge or operator.

Lake Albert: frequently asked questions

Where is Lake Albert?

Lake Albert lies in the Albertine Rift on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Victoria Nile flows into it through the Albert Delta at the end of Murchison Falls National Park.

Can I swim in Lake Albert?

Do not count on swimming. Crocodiles live in the river and the delta, and no freely accessible bathing beach is known for visitors. Ask your lodge before you go near the water.

How do I see the delta?

Take the boat trip downstream from Paraa. The scheduled departure is at 07:00 from the south bank jetty and the trip takes 4 to 5 hours. Book ahead and ask what is included.

Can I cross Lake Albert to the Congo?

No. Do not plan a border crossing on the lake. Travel advice asks visitors to avoid non-essential travel within 20 km of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Is Lake Albert part of the national park?

No. The park ends where the Victoria Nile reaches the Albert Delta, and the boundary of the delta wetland is not the boundary of the park.
