Masindi, the southern gateway to the park
Masindi lies on the southern road route to Murchison Falls National Park. From Kampala the road turns toward Masindi at Kafu, and from Masindi it continues to the park gates and to Paraa on the Nile. Most visitors who drive pass through here, which is why it is worth knowing the distances before you set off.
The figures below are approximate. Use them for planning, not for exact timing. For a full day or a two-night trip, see the Murchison Falls tours from Kampala and book a driver who knows the route.

From Kampala to Masindi and the gate
How the road fits into the day.
The distance from Kampala to the south entrance is about 305 km, and the drive takes 4 to 5 hours. Many lodges are another 1 to 2 hours beyond the entrance. That is why a one-day trip by road is long: the drive there and back to the south entrance alone takes 8 to 10 hours, before any time in the park. Masindi is the town on the southern route to the park.
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary lies on the Gulu road, about 176 km from Kampala, with a left turn at Nakitoma. It is a stop on the northern route toward Masindi, not part of the national park. The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary page has the fees and the walking times.

Paraa, the north bank and Pakwach
Where the river hub and the northern gates are.
Paraa
Paraa is the centre for river trips. The boats for the waterfall and the delta leave from the south bank, and a pickup at the north bank or at other riverside lodges can be arranged in advance. A vehicle bridge links the two banks, so your day does not depend on a ferry. Ask your lodge about the road conditions before you set out. Park gates are open 07:00 to 19:00, and the speed limit in the park is 40 km/h.
Pakwach
Pakwach is the town on the northern side. Tangi Gate is at Pakwach and Chobe Gate is at Karuma. Ask your lodge or driver which entry point they use and whether it is open on your date. The north is a different route from the Masindi road, so do not mix the two when you plan the day.
Buses and minibuses
A bus or minibus between Kampala and Masindi is possible. There is no regular service to Paraa with fixed times and fares that you can count on, so plan the last stretch with a driver or with your lodge.
Budongo Forest from Masindi
Budongo is a damp, semi-deciduous tropical forest at the top of the Albertine Rift with about 435 kmยฒ of continuous forest cover. The forest sits south of the Nile, on the Masindi side of the park. Chimpanzee tracking is offered at Kaniyo Pabidi, with two visit times a day. A trek usually takes 2 to 4 hours and you spend one hour with the chimpanzees once they are found. The minimum age is 15 years.
The eco lodge at the forest is closed, although the forest activities continue. The research station does not take tourists. For birds, the Busingiro area and the Royal Mile are the places to go. The Budongo Forest guide has the prices and the rules. Chimpanzee tracking in another park is a separate trip, covered at chimpanzee trekking in Kibale.
There is no public transport from Masindi to the research area, only private transfers. Ask your operator about the other forest sites.
